DAY #9: A Modified “NaNoWriMo” Challenge (Write 15 Minutes of Garbage Every Day)

Hmmm…..  I’ve hit an impasse with my story.  It has taken a surprising turn and I don’t know what to do.  If you’ve been reading the story I’ve been writing for the past 8 days, yesterday, I discovered that Queen Sunayna and Mahish have a history.  They may have grown up together, but I’m not sure yet.  I need the weekend to figure this out.

I’ve had a lot of fun finally putting down my thoughts on this blog.  The characters are coming to life for me.  It’s actually kind of amazing, because I’ve read about this happening with other authors, but it’s never happened to me.

All of my prior fiction reading is kicking in.  My characters are taking on personalities that I didn’t expect.  Sunayna has shades of Ellen Robillard/Melanie Hamilton from Gone With The Wind and Mahish’s dark humor reminds me of Rhett Butler (GWTW) and Mr. Rochester (Jane Eyre).  (Poor Scarlett O’Hara has been left out of the story this time around.)  I definitely did not expect that to happen.

The story I’m writing is actually the background for the book idea that I have.  I thought spending this challenge writing it out would help me get the juices flowing for my “real” story.  But I’ve actually discovered that I have a “real” story unfolding right in front of me…..  Who knew?

So, if you’re a struggling writer, I would definitely recommend a self-imposed writing challenge like this one.  Even just writing for 15 minutes a day helps.  (Truthfully, it’s turned into writing closer to 45 minutes a day for me.)  This challenge is helping me and I hope that it helps you too.

Sorry to keep this post short.  I promise to write something more tomorrow.  Happy writing!
